The Connect Care clinical information system (CIS) enables ordering of all medications, procedures, investigations and interventions available anywhere in Alberta. Orderable items may be subject to restrictions, timing considerations, local availability and a world of other considerations. The complexity is enormous. For the most part, the CIS is able to protect the prescribing clinician from what can be assumed from what is known elsewhere in the chart. Even so, most orders require careful attention to settings and details. The good news is that once these have been sorted once, the order can be saved as a personal preference with all the typical settings pre-filled.
DI orders can present unique challenges. Clinical decision supports (appropriateness guides) may be embedded. Outpatient orders must also be mindful of whether the investigation is expected at an AHS facility (on Connect Care) or an independent DI provider.
