Inpatient ePrescribe fax Implementation - Support and Updates

This page gathers resources specific to the implementation of the "Inpatient ePrescribe fax" application in select Continuing Care facilities. The implementation will affect both Inpatient ePrescribe fax site prescribers and other Connect Care prescribers.

Inpatient ePrescribe fax has been approved for implementation at Connect Care Type A, Type B, and co-located Type C Continuing Care facilities that have external pharmacies. After a successful pilot at St. Michael’s Health Centre in Lethbridge in June 2025, there will be a staged rollout to other sites through 2026.

Training, cutover, and support information for prescribers at sites where Inpatient ePrescribe fax is being implemented is below, as well as important information on how the implementation may impact other Connect Care prescribers.

Inpatient ePrescribe fax is supported by current inpatient medication management functionality for prescribers and nursing, providing a more streamlined medication workflow that reduces risk for patients and improves workflow for prescribers and nurses.

New medication orders and changes to existing medication orders will show up as "Acknowledge Orders" in the summary overview, in the brain and patient list columns. The eMAR in Connect Care will automatically update with new/changed medication orders.
Administration of medications will occur on the eMAR in Connect Care, replacing the paper MAR for the departments using Inpatient ePrescribe fax orders.
Where appropriate, flowsheets will update automatically with data generated from orders or entered in eMAR, e.g., pain scores, infusion orders, and administered volumes.

Cutover

Cutover is a process through which key pieces of information about admitted patients are entered into Connect Care prior to implementation. Cutover includes both technical and clinical elements. The primary concern for prescribers will be the management of medication and non-medication orders, and the translation of important information about patients’ clinical status from a paper record to an electronic one.

Important Information for Other Connect Care Prescribers (click to expand/collapse)

Continuing Care facilities that are moving to inpatient ePrescribe fax functionality in Connect Care will be able to use inpatient medications, replacing their previous outpatient medication ordering workflows. This will impact the way acute care facilities complete interfacility transfers to an ePrescribe fax Continuing Care facility.

Updated IFT tools will now direct prescribers at acute care facilities to use inpatient medications, which will send signed & held medications to the receiving Continuing Care facility with the required prescription defaults.
To ensure the ePrescribe fax prescription defaults are available at the receiving Continuing Care site, acute care prescribers will need to fill in the unit field on the discharge order screen, using the information provided in the process instructions.
